Reading the Fortunes is an Everway practice that we've adapted into House of Cards. We use Trumps (both Dworkin decks and Trumps created by PCs in play) for the readings, allowing a broader set of readings since there are a lot of PC and NPC Trumps who could appear in a reading.
To read the Fortunes (and Trumps), a character lays out six cards in a pyramid: three in the bottom row, two in the middle row, and one (sideways) on the top. Direction matters in the bottom two rows; the outcome card is in the balance and thus its direction is not yet decided.
The cards are read as follows:
By tradition the GM posts the cards to the list, the player characters (often starting with the querent) offer readings, and then any NPCs offer readings.
Sometimes the GMs draw randomly from the Discord bot or the Fortune Deck on this web site,; other times the cards are carefully chosen. Characters with a high Water score are more likely to receive carefully-tailored layouts or hints from the GMs as to the meaning of the cards. However, the GMs have also been known to take particularly well-thought-out analyses of the cards and retroactively change undiscovered plot elements to match them!
